But We Trust
A prayer for the waiting, from Psalm 13
Psalm 13:1-6NIV
How long, O LORD? We come to you at the start of a new month with the same question some of us brought to the last one. You know the situations. The illness that has not lifted. The child who has not called. The prayer that has been prayed a thousand times and has met silence. We do not hide the question from you, because you gave us these words to pray.
Look on us and answer. Give light to our eyes. Do not let our sorrow harden into despair or our waiting into bitterness. Keep the enemy from saying he has overcome us.
And now, Lord, help us to turn. We trust in your unfailing love. We say it before we feel it, and we ask you to make the feeling follow. Our hearts will rejoice in your salvation, because you have already saved us in Jesus Christ, and nothing that happens this month can undo that.
We will sing to you, because you have been good to us. Put a song in our mouths today, even a small one. Amen.
