A Prayer for the Tired
For the end of a long day, when the work is done but the mind will not settle.
God of the morning and the evening, we come to you worn.
The day asked much of us. Some of it we gave gladly. Some we gave because we had no choice. Now the house is quiet, or it is not, and we are still turning things over. The task we left unfinished. The word we wish we had not said. The person we could not help.
We set these down in front of you. Not to be rid of them, but because we cannot carry them into sleep.
Teach us the difference between what is ours to hold and what is yours. Loosen our grip on the second.
Keep those we love through the dark hours. Keep the lonely, the sick, the frightened, and the ones who work while others rest.
Give us sleep that heals, and a morning we did not earn.
Amen.
