A Prayer for the Tired
For the ones who come to the end of the day with little left to give.
God of the long day, we come as we are. Some of us are rested. Many of us are not. We bring the work that is finished and the work that never seems to finish. We bring the people we love and the people we find hard to love. We set them all down here, because we cannot carry them alone.
Teach us to measure the day by faithfulness and not by output. Where we have been impatient, make us gentle. Where we have been afraid, steady us. Where we have hurried past someone who needed us, send us back.
Give us enough light for the next step, and no more than that, so that we learn again to trust you for the step after it.
Keep us through the night. Wake us ready. And when we have nothing left to give, remind us that you give first, and that your mercies do not run out.
Amen.
