A Prayer for the Ones Sent Home
A prayer shaped by the deliverance in Mark 5.
Mark 5:1-20NIV
Lord Jesus, you crossed a lake at night to reach one man nobody else could reach. You were not put off by the tombs, or the chains, or the shouting. You asked his name. Thank you that no one is too far gone for you, and that no place is too dark for you to step out of the boat.
We confess that we are often more like the townspeople than the man. We are afraid of what your mercy might cost us. We ask you to keep your distance when your nearness would disturb what we have arranged. Forgive us. Give us the courage to welcome you even when we cannot predict what you will do.
For those among us who long to leave and whom you are sending home, give strength. Make our lives a clear account of what you have done and of how you have had mercy on us. Let the people who knew us before see the difference and ask why. And when we are not welcomed, keep us faithful, and keep us kind. Amen.
