A Prayer for Sunday Worship
A congregational prayer drawn from Genesis 17, for people learning to answer to their new name.
Genesis 17:1-8NIV
God Almighty, you appeared to Abraham when he was old and told him to walk before you. We gather this morning to do the same. Here we are, in your sight, with nothing hidden. Look on us with the kindness you showed him.
You gave him a new name before he had a single child by Sarah. You call us saints, children, heirs, before we look like any of those things. We confess that we laugh sometimes at what you say about us. We offer you smaller versions of ourselves that seem more likely. Refuse them, as you refused Abraham's substitute, and hold us to the name you have given.
Make our households places where your covenant is remembered. Let our children know they are included before they can understand it. Let the strangers among us know they belong.
Be our everlasting God, as you promised to be Abraham's. We worship you through Jesus, in whom every promise is yes. Amen.
