When Politics Presses In
A short study on holding to God when public life feels unsteady.
Political seasons crowd the mind. News arrives faster than we can pray through it. Scripture does not ignore this. It speaks plainly about rulers, and about the God who stands above them.
Begin with Psalm 146:3: "Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save." The verse does not forbid hope. It relocates it. Leaders are finite. God is not.
Then read Romans 13:1: "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Here is a different weight. We owe good order its due. Yet the same God who orders authority also outlasts it.
Hold the two together. Trust belongs to God alone. Respect is owed to those who govern. Neither cancels the other.
The Gospel Coalition offers a reflection on Martyn Lloyd-Jones's ministry in a time of political crisis, drawing three lessons from it. https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/lloyd-jones-preaching-politics/
Carry one question through the day: where have I asked a leader to do what only God can do?
