Rest for the Weary

What it means to be given rest, not simply to find it.

The FaithDaily Desk1 min read

Rest is easy to want and hard to take. We know the feeling of carrying too much for too long. The body learns it first, then the mind.

In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus speaks to exactly this tiredness. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28–30).

Notice the order. Rest is given first, as a gift. Only then comes the yoke, which is work shared rather than work removed. The promise is not an empty schedule. It is a lighter load and a companion to carry it.

Today, name one burden honestly. Do not solve it yet. Simply bring it, and sit with the words: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

Then return to your day. The burden may remain. The way you carry it need not.
