The Weight You Were Not Made to Carry

Rest is not a reward for finishing the work; it is an invitation offered in the middle of it.

The FaithDaily Desk1 min read

There is a kind of tiredness that sleep does not touch. You lie down and the list keeps talking. The body stops, but the load does not. Most of us know this weariness, and most of us have learned to carry it quietly, as if it were simply the cost of being responsible.

Into that quiet, Jesus speaks plainly. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." He does not ask you to be less tired first. He does not wait for the load to be justified or explained. The invitation is addressed to exactly the people who are worn down, and it is addressed to them as they are.

Then he says something stranger. "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." A yoke is the wooden frame that lets two animals pull together. It is still work. But it is shared work, set on you by someone who describes himself as gentle. The rest he offers is not the absence of burden. It is the presence of a companion who carries the greater share.

So today, name the weight honestly. Some of it is yours to bear. Some of it never was, and you picked it up out of fear or habit. You do not have to sort all of it out this morning. You only have to come, tired as you are, and let the load be shared.

Rest for the Weary

An old invitation from Matthew's Gospel still speaks plainly to anyone worn down by the pace of ordinary life.
