The Weight You Were Not Made to Carry
Rest is not a reward for the strong; it is an offer made first to the tired.
You may have come to the end of a long day. The list is not finished. It rarely is.
Jesus speaks to people in exactly that condition. He says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Notice who is invited. Not the rested. Not those who have earned it. The weary and the burdened. That is most of us, on most days.
A yoke is a wooden frame that joins two animals so they can pull together. It sounds like more work, not less. But the point is the sharing of the load. You are not asked to carry everything alone. You were never meant to.
Learning takes time. So does rest. Neither arrives all at once. The invitation is to walk at a pace set by someone gentle, not by the hurry around you.
Christians across many traditions have returned to these words for centuries. Some pray them at night. Some repeat them in a single breath. The words do not belong to one group. They are simply held out, again, to anyone who is tired.
So set down, for a moment, the weight you were not made to carry. Breathe. The offer still stands. Rest for your souls is not a small thing to be given.
