Daily Church News Briefing — Tuesday, 3 November 2026

By The FaithDaily Desk

Good morning. The gravest story of the day came from Florida. Charisma News reported that nine people were killed in a plane crash, and that new details had emerged about the pilot, Capt. Jeff Gregory, 55. According to the outlet, Gregory reportedly prayed the Lord's Prayer in the aircraft's final moments, and is being remembered as a Christian of powerful faith.

From England, Anglican Ink reported on a possible protest at Westminster Abbey. The service in question marks King Charles III's first inauguration of the Church of England's General Synod, the church's governing assembly. According to Anglican Ink, some members described as orthodox may decline Holy Communion at the service, should they follow the advice of the campaign group Anglican Futures.

Three reports touched on how churches form their people. The Gospel Coalition pointed to a new survey suggesting that Christians read the Bible less than is often assumed of "the people of the Book," and that the wider literacy crisis has reached the pews. Christianity Today examined how language changes, framing some shifts as born of sin and others as natural, and noting that the journalist Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times has expressed alarm at ideological attempts at language change. And Christianity Today reported on a shortage of worship leaders in churches, following Anna Dunsbergen, who, it said, enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa planning to become a teacher rather than a worship leader, having sung in school and church choirs and acquired some basic guitar skills.

Two further pieces, both from The Gospel Coalition, turned to the reasons behind belief. In a podcast, Gavin Ortlund spoke with Collin Hansen about whether Christianity makes sense in the face of God, evil and suffering. In an essay, a writer described moving from justice activism toward what the piece calls the whole gospel, arguing that the two concerns belong together rather than apart.

For the reader, the day's throughline is quiet but real: what congregations know, the words they use, and who stands up to lead them in song all shape the faith that is passed on.

Zoom out: Several of the day's reports — on Bible reading, on changing language, and on a shortage of worship leaders — circle the same question of how churches hand on their faith.
