Good morning. The day's most consequential story concerns people, not argument. Religion News Service reports that Hispanic Pentecostal leaders travelled to Washington to call for an extension of Temporary Protected Status — a federal designation, known as TPS, that shields nationals of certain countries from deportation and lets them work legally — as a deadline affecting Salvadorans draws near. The leaders urged immigration protections in the face of the Trump administration's policies. RNS notes that the Pentecostals were themselves divided on whether those policies would shape how they vote in the future. The division matters: it shows a constituency weighing a concrete threat to its members against its other commitments, and declining to speak with one voice.

That question of faith and public life runs into the day's most contested book. Christianity Today reviews Backslide: Reclaiming a Faith and a Nation After the Christian Turn Against Democracy, by Robert P. Jones. According to the review, Jones argues that Donald Trump is the American equivalent of Adolf Hitler and will destroy American democracy if his hold on power is not stopped. The review's own title states its position: rejecting evangelicalism is not how democracy is restored. So the exchange here is not a report of consensus but a disagreement in print — one writer's charge, another publication's rejoinder.

The rest of the day turns inward, to how faith is taught and carried. Christianity Today also considers Jesus as a storyteller, taking the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37. There, the publication notes, a lawyer asks, "Teacher … what must I do to inherit eternal life?" and Jesus replies with a question of his own: "What is written in the Law? … How do you read it?" The piece traces the move from command to story — from "Thou shalt" to "Once upon a time."

The Gospel Coalition addresses younger readers and their griefs. Its argument is spare: we do not need God to answer all our anxious whys and what-ifs; we need to see him more clearly for who he is. It calls this an ancient remedy for a present sorrow.

Together the four pieces mark one day's range — a deadline pressing on families, a fight over what faith owes a democracy, and two quieter calls to read, and to see, more carefully.
