Wednesday's churches: a St. Louis archbishop sues over detainee access, a Natal suspension, and questions over a New York cathedral's books

Good morning. The most consequential development came from St. Louis. Religion News Service reports that a Catholic archbishop has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over access to immigrant detainees. According to RNS, the suit accuses the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement of instituting policies that violate what it calls "core constitutional values." RNS describes it as the first time a Catholic archbishop has sued the administration on this matter.

Two stories concerned safeguarding and oversight. Anglican Ink reports that the Anglican Diocese of Natal has suspended a priest accused of sexually abusing minors at St Christopher's Parish Church in Sobantu, Pietermaritzburg. The diocese has opened a canonical investigation alongside the criminal process, and the priest's name has not been published. Separately, Anglican Ink reports that Anglican Watch, which it describes as the unofficial watchdog of the Episcopal Church, has raised concerns about the finances and spending priorities of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York, citing financial information.

Several items sat at the meeting point of church and public life. Charisma News reports that religious scholars who accepted invitations from Anthropic came away believing the company wanted them to recognise its Claude chatbot as a conscious being deserving of moral consideration comparable to a person. Christianity Today, in a piece adapted from Russell Moore's newsletter, reflects on the "Cornell seven" sexual-assault case involving members of a university fraternity. Two further Christianity Today essays argue for housing abundance and examine the end of cheap lodging and the rise of homelessness.

From the wider Communion, Anglican Ink reports that Tanzania's Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, was installed as a lay canon of the Anglican Church of Tanzania on 4 October, during the consecration of the first Bishop of Handeni, the Rt Rev Charles Mika Lundu, at Christ the King Cathedral, Chanika. Anglican Ink also reports a letter sent by a Cuban bishop and clergy to the church and the Cuban people.
