Daily Church Briefing — Wednesday, 14 October 2026: a pope's recovery, ballots and courts

By The FaithDaily Desk

Good morning. Pope Leo XIV is recovering after lung cancer surgery, Religion News Service reported from Vatican City, with a demanding trip to South America scheduled just 24 days after the operation. His recovery and further test results will help determine whether he can make the journey. It is the most consequential item of the day: the health of one man against a fixed and difficult itinerary.

American politics ran through two reports, both from Religion News Service. As Idaho, Missouri, Nevada and Virginia prepare to vote on abortion-related ballot measures, RNS said polling suggests abortion is less of a priority for voters than in other recent election cycles. A separate RNS account of a Pew Research midterm report found religious Americans unhappy with both parties, with Donald Trump and with the state of the country; the economy and the future of democracy topped their concerns, while evangelicals stayed with the Republican Party.

Two church bodies met the courts and canons. United Methodist News reported that a Maryland appellate court ruled for the Baltimore-Washington Conference in a suit brought by 37 churches seeking to leave The United Methodist Church with their property, an opinion that could shape other cases in the civil courts. In Scotland, Anglican Ink reported that the Preliminary Proceedings Committee of the Scottish Episcopal Church has referred a complaint concerning the Rt Rev Anne Dyer, Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney, to the Church's Procurator under Canon 54, its clergy discipline canon.

There was growth to report as well. Charisma News said Germany's Federation of Free Evangelical Churches documented about 2,700 conversions and a sharp rise in baptisms, with leaders hoping to extend the renewal. United Methodist News marked the 50th anniversary of the Korean Association of The United Methodist Church, where 315 clergy and lay leaders weighed how to nurture the next generation's leadership.

Further afield, Religion News Service carried an Associated Press report from Ceuta, where a crisis that began in late July — when about 80,000 people crossed into the Spanish exclave from Morocco amid online rumours that the border had opened — has exposed Christian-Muslim fault lines. United Methodist News reported that Filipino United Methodists have questioned the U.S.-led Pax Silica artificial-intelligence hub, raising concerns about environmental harm and who would benefit.

Commentary filled out the day. Charisma News reported that the Rev. Franklin Graham questioned the outrage over plans to livestream the Fort Hood shooter's execution, pointing to Hollywood's packaging of death and violence as entertainment. Religion News Service ran an argument that a movement among some conservative African American Christians to denounce membership in historically African American fraternities and sororities, and in Freemason orders, is misguided. Christianity Today and The Gospel Coalition offered essays on artificial intelligence and on faith in the Faroe Islands.

Zoom out: Several of the day's stories showed churches entangled with courts and ballots at once — a Maryland property ruling, a Scottish discipline referral, and abortion measures before voters in four states.
