When Your Cravings Are Being Farmed
The old work of hiding Scripture in the heart turns out to be a steady answer to a very new kind of pull.
The Gospel Coalition makes a plain observation. Online, algorithms capture our affections and lure us in through our cravings. Against this, the publication proposes something slow and deliberate: study and memorize Scripture, and especially the Sermon on the Mount.
The counsel fits the problem. The Sermon speaks directly to where our wanting goes. "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). A screen is one place a treasure can sit. So is money, so is status, so is any good thing lifted out of its order.
Jesus does not only diagnose. He points the hunger somewhere worthy. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:6).
To memorize these words is to carry a second voice. When the feed speaks, another sentence is already there, learned by heart and ready.
