When the Word Is Sung

Religion News Service reports that TheSinging.Bible, a website that sets biblical text to music, passed one million song plays within two weeks of its launch. The number is striking. The habit behind it is not new.

Singing scripture is one of the oldest things believers do. Many of the Psalms were written to be sung. The instruction has outlasted every instrument first used to carry it.

Consider Psalm 96:1: "Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth." The verse does two things at once. It asks for something fresh — a new song — and it widens the circle to everyone, everywhere. A tune can carry a line of text into a tired mind when plain reading cannot.

Colossians 3:16 sees the same power. It ties singing to teaching, naming "psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit." The song is not decoration. It is instruction that stays.

For today, take one verse you already half-know. Say it, then sing it, however plainly, in whatever tradition shaped you. Notice which words lodge. Ask why the melody holds what the eye lets slip.
