When Sinners Entice You

Observe the setting. A father speaks to his son, and the mother's teaching is named alongside his. The instruction is described as a garland for the head and a chain for the neck, ornaments that make a young person more beautiful, not less free. Then the father gets specific. He imagines a group of men inviting the son to join them in ambush, in violence, in easy money shared among friends. The invitation is warm. Come with us. Throw in your lot with us. We will all share one purse.

Interpret what is happening. The temptation is not presented as obviously evil. It is presented as belonging. The son is offered a group, a purpose, and a reward at once. The father's answer is blunt: do not go along with them. He explains that these men are laying an ambush for their own lives. Greed takes away the life of those who hold it.

Apply it honestly. Most of us are not being recruited for robbery. But we are recruited for gossip, for shortcuts at work, for the joke at someone's expense, for spending we cannot afford because everyone else is. The pattern is the same: belonging offered in exchange for conscience.
