They Had Not Understood About the Loaves

Observe. When Jesus climbs into the boat and the wind stops, Mark says the disciples were completely amazed. Then he explains the amazement in an unexpected way. It was not because walking on water is startling, though it is. It was because they had not understood about the loaves, and their hearts were hardened.

Interpret. Mark links the two miracles deliberately. The feeding of the five thousand should have told the disciples that the one with them had God's own power over creation. If they had grasped that, a figure walking on the sea would have made sense. Their amazement was a symptom of not having connected what they had already seen with who Jesus was. Hardness of heart, in Mark, is not hostility. It is slowness to draw the conclusion the evidence demands.

Apply. Most of us have a record of God's provision we could recite if asked. Fewer of us let that record shape our expectations the next time the wind turns. What has God already done in your life that ought to make the present storm less surprising? Where are you treating a past provision as a happy accident rather than as a revelation of who he is? And what would it look like this week to row with a soft heart instead of a hardened one?
