The House on the Rock

At the end of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus told a short story that sounds like it could have come from Proverbs. Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice, he said, is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came, the streams rose, the winds blew and beat against the house, and it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Then the mirror image: everyone who hears his words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built on sand, and when the same storm came, the house fell with a great crash.

Notice what makes the difference. Both men heard. Both men built. The same storm hit both houses. The only variable is whether the words were put into practice. Wisdom, in Jesus' telling, is not knowing more than the fool. It is doing what you already know.

This is exactly the concern of Proverbs. Wisdom calls in the street and the problem is never that people cannot hear her. It is that they will not act. Jesus takes that ancient pattern and puts himself at its center. The rock is not wisdom in general. It is his words, practiced.

The storm in the parable is not optional. It comes to both houses. The question for anyone finishing a week in Proverbs is simply this: what have you heard this week that you have not yet built on?
