Ready to Answer: Giving the Reason for Our Hope

When we are asked what we believe and why, Scripture calls us to answer with both clarity and gentleness.

The FaithDaily Desk1 min read

There are seasons when believers are asked to explain their faith. Sometimes the question is warm and curious. Sometimes it is pointed, and the one asking is not a friend. Peter wrote to Christians who lived with that pressure, and his counsel still steadies us.

He says: "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15).

Notice the order. Reverence comes first. Before we speak to anyone else, we settle the matter within. Christ is Lord. That conviction is the ground we stand on when the questions come.

Then comes readiness. We are to know what we hold and why we hold it. Not to win an argument, but to tell the truth plainly.

And then the manner: gentleness and respect. Paul echoes it. "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt" (Colossians 4:6).

Today, consider how you would answer. What is the reason for the hope that you have? Name it quietly to yourself. Then ask God to make you ready, and kind.
