He Looked at Him and Loved Him

A man runs up to Jesus, kneels, and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. He has kept the commandments since he was a boy. Then comes a line no other Gospel includes. Jesus looked at him and loved him.

Then Jesus says the hard thing. One thing you lack. Sell what you have, give to the poor, and come, follow me. The man's face falls and he goes away sad, because he had great wealth.

The lesson is in the order. Love came first, then the demand, and the demand was itself a form of the love. Jesus saw that the man's wealth had become the place where he kept his security, and he offered him the only way out, which was to let it go and take Jesus instead.

Jesus does not chase him. He lets him choose. That is worth sitting with. Love in the life of Jesus is not the absence of hard requests. It is the presence of them, offered with a look that the man never forgot, and a door he was free to walk through or away from.
