Walk Before Me
At ninety-nine, Abram receives a new name and a command that is really an invitation.
Genesis 17:1NIV
Genesis 17:1. When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said that he is God Almighty, and told Abram to walk before him faithfully and be blameless. Thirteen years have passed since Ishmael's birth. Thirteen years of silence in the text. Then God speaks, and the first thing he says is his own name: El Shaddai, God Almighty.
The command that follows sounds heavy. Walk before me. Be blameless. But look at the order again. God announces who he is before he asks anything. The one who is almighty is the one who asks Abram to walk in his sight. Blamelessness here is not sinless perfection; it is wholeness, integrity, a life lived openly before God with nothing hidden.
On this Sunday morning, that is the invitation. Not to impress God but to walk before him, in view, with nothing tucked away. The Almighty is watching, and he is for you. That changes what it means to be seen.
