Trust with the Whole Heart
The most quoted verse in Proverbs asks for more than agreement; it asks for the whole heart.
Proverbs 3:5-6NIV
Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Many of us learned this verse early and have heard it at graduations, in cards, on wall hangings. Familiarity can flatten it. Read it slowly and it becomes demanding. All your heart. Not on your own understanding. In all your ways. Three times the verse refuses to let you keep a corner for yourself.
It does not say your understanding is worthless. It says do not lean on it, do not put your weight there. The image is of a person propping himself on something that will not hold. The alternative is not thoughtlessness but trust: acting on what God has said even when your own calculations point elsewhere.
The promise is that he will make your paths straight. Not short, not painless, but straight, leading where they should. On a Saturday, with the week's decisions behind you and next week's ahead, that is a promise worth leaning on.
