The Gift Is Not Like the Trespass
Romans 5:15 insists that grace does more than cancel sin; it overflows.
Romans 5:15NIV
Romans 5:15. Paul has just set Adam and Christ side by side, and before anyone can assume the two are simply mirror images, he stops to say that the gift is not like the trespass. One man's sin brought death to many. That is the shared shape. But the grace of God and the gift that came through the one man Jesus Christ did not merely undo the damage. It overflowed to the many.
The difference is one of proportion. Adam's failure was enough to ruin. Christ's obedience was more than enough to restore. Paul keeps reaching for the phrase how much more throughout this section, because he wants us to see that grace is never a bare cancellation. It is abundance.
On the first day of a new month, that is worth holding. Whatever you brought into August, the debts and the regrets, grace is not sized to match them. It is sized to exceed them.
