The Gentle Answer
One sentence from Proverbs 15 can change the temperature of a room.
Proverbs 15:1NIV
Proverbs 15:1. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
This proverb is about the second sentence in an argument. Someone speaks to you with heat. What you say next decides whether the heat rises or falls. The gentle answer is not weakness and it is not agreement. It is a soft reply that refuses to match the other person's force. Proverbs says it turns wrath aside, the way a cushion takes the force out of a thrown object.
The harsh word does the opposite. It stirs, like a stick in embers. Most of us can remember a conversation where one sharp reply turned a disagreement into a fight that lasted days.
Tuesday is an ordinary day, which is when this verse matters most. There will be an email, a comment from a family member, a driver who cuts you off. Somewhere in the next few hours you will get to choose the second sentence. Proverbs says the whole conversation can turn on it.
