New Every Morning
When the night has been long, the book of Lamentations offers a mercy that resets with the dawn.
Lamentations was written out of ruin. The city had fallen, and the poet does not pretend otherwise. Grief fills the surrounding verses. Yet in the middle of the book comes a line that has steadied readers for centuries.
"Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23).
Notice what the verse does not say. It does not say the trouble is over. It does not promise that tomorrow will be easy. It says the supply of mercy is not spent, and that each morning brings a fresh portion.
That is a quiet claim, and a practical one. You do not have to carry yesterday's whole weight into today. The compassion you needed then was given then. The compassion you need now is being given now.
If you are tired, start there. The morning is not a verdict on the night. It is a gift, and it arrives again.
