Mindful of Us
Psalm 8 puts a human being under the night sky and asks the obvious question
Psalm 8:3-4NIV
Psalm 8:3-4. David considers the heavens, the moon and the stars that God set in place, and asks what human beings are that God should be mindful of them and care for them. It is the question anyone asks who has stood outside on a clear summer night far from city light. The sky is so large. We are so brief.
The answer the psalm gives is startling. Verse 5 says that God made humanity a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned them with glory and honor. The smallness is real, and so is the crown. Both are true at once.
Hebrews 2:6-9 picks this psalm up and says that we do not yet see everything under humanity's feet, but we do see Jesus, who was made lower for a while and is now crowned. The one who set the stars in place came down beneath them to carry our shame. On this Sunday, that is the reason the question in verse 4 has an answer. He is mindful of us because he became one of us.
