Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord
Sarah laughs behind the tent flap, and God answers her laughter with a question that has no good answer except no.
Genesis 18:14NIV
Genesis 18:14. The Lord asks, is anything too hard for the Lord? Then he repeats the promise: at the appointed time next year, Sarah will have a son. The question comes after Sarah has laughed to herself, listening at the tent entrance while three visitors eat under the trees at Mamre. She is nearly ninety. She knows how bodies work. The laugh is not mockery; it is the sound of a woman who stopped hoping a long time ago.
God does not scold her. He asks a question. Is anything too hard for the Lord? The Hebrew word can also mean wonderful. Is anything too wonderful for the Lord to do? Sarah's realism had shrunk her God to the size of her circumstances.
Monday mornings tend to do that to all of us. The week ahead looks fixed, the problems look permanent, and hope feels naive. Let the question sit in your mind today. Is anything too hard for the Lord? Answer it honestly, and then live as if the answer is true.
