A Prayer for the Tired
For the end of a long day, when strength is thin and the work is not yet finished.
God of the morning and the evening, we come to you worn.
We have carried more than we meant to today. Some of it was ours to carry, and some of it we picked up without thinking. We set it down now, here, in front of you. We do not have the strength to sort it all tonight, and we trust that you do.
Thank you for the ordinary mercies we almost missed: a meal, a kind word, a task finished, a few minutes of quiet. Thank you for the people who shared the weight with us, and for the ones we have not met who prayed without knowing our names.
Where we were short with someone, soften us. Where we were afraid, steady us. Where we gave up too soon, give us a reason to begin again tomorrow.
Grant us real rest tonight — not only sleep, but the kind of rest that loosens the grip of worry. And when we wake, let us find that you have been awake the whole time, keeping watch over what we could not.
Amen.
