A Prayer for the Tired Evening
A short prayer for anyone who comes to the end of the day with more weight than words.
Faithful God, the day is done, and we are not sorry to lay it down.
Some of what we carried was good. Some of it we would gladly have refused. We offer all of it to you now, the finished and the unfinished alike, and we ask you to hold what we cannot.
Where we were patient, we thank you. Where we were short with those we love, we ask your mercy and theirs. Teach us to begin again tomorrow without pretending today did not happen.
We remember those who cannot rest tonight: the sick, the frightened, the ones who watch at a bedside, the ones who have no bed. Be near to them. Be their quiet when there is no quiet.
Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God." Help us to be still. Loosen our grip on the hour we are leaving and the hour we have not yet met. Grant us sleep, and in the morning a steadier heart.
Amen.
