A Prayer for the Tired
For the end of a long day, when the work is unfinished and the heart is heavy.
Father, I come to you tired. The day asked more of me than I had to give. Some of it I did well. Some of it I left undone. You know which is which, and you love me in both.
Quiet the noise I carry home. Slow my thoughts enough to hear you. The psalm says, "Be still, and know that I am God." Teach me to be still. I am not the one who holds the world together. You are.
Thank you for the small mercies I nearly missed. A kind word. A meal. A moment of rest. Help me to notice them tomorrow.
Watch over those I love while I sleep. Watch over those I will never meet, in churches near and far, who pray tonight as I do. We are one people before you.
Keep me until morning. And when it comes, let me begin again, unhurried, in your care. Amen.
