The Weight You Were Not Meant to Carry Alone

Rest is not the reward for finishing the work; it is what Christ offers in the middle of it.

There is a kind of tiredness that sleep does not touch. You lie down and the list stands up. The bills, the diagnosis, the child who will not speak to you, the prayer you have prayed so many times it has worn smooth in your mouth. You are not lazy. You are carrying something heavy, and you have been carrying it a long time.

Jesus speaks to exactly this. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." He does not say the weary should try harder. He does not say the burden is imagined. He sees it, names it, and calls the ones who bear it to himself.

Notice what he offers next. "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." A yoke is not the removal of work. It is the wooden frame that lets two oxen pull as one, so the load is shared and neither walks the field alone. Christ does not empty your hands. He steps in beside you.

"For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Easy, here, does not mean effortless. It means well-fitted, the way a good tool sits in the hand without chafing.

So bring the weight you woke up with. Do not clean it first. The invitation was made to the burdened, and today that word includes you.

The Rest That Comes Before the Work

Weariness is not a verdict on your faith; it is the condition Jesus spoke to directly, and answered with an invitation rather than a demand.
