The Weight You Were Not Made to Carry
Rest is not a reward for finishing; it is an invitation offered while the work is still undone.
There is a kind of tiredness that sleep does not touch. You lie down and the list stays awake. The bills, the message you have not answered, the person you are worried about, the thing you said yesterday that you would take back if you could. You are not lazy. You are carrying too much.
Into that exact tiredness Jesus speaks. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Notice who is invited. Not the rested. Not the ones who have their affairs in order. The weary. The burdened. The invitation is addressed to the state you are in right now, not the state you keep promising to reach.
He goes on: "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29). A yoke is not the end of work. It is a wooden frame that lets two animals pull together, so the load is shared and the pace is set by the stronger one. He is not offering you an empty field. He is offering to take the heavy end.
So the question tonight is small and specific. What are you carrying that was never yours to carry alone? Name one thing. Set it down where he can reach it. You do not have to finish before you rest. You have to come.
Rest for your souls is not a distant prize. It is the thing he hands you at the door.
