The Discipline of a Father Who Delights

The opening of Proverbs 3 reads like a series of promises with conditions. Keep my commands, and they will prolong your life. Let love and faithfulness never leave you, and you will win favor with God and people. Honor the LORD with your wealth, and your barns will be filled. Each pair holds out a good outcome and asks for a particular kind of life.

Then the passage turns, and verses 11 and 12 say something that reframes everything before it. Do not despise the LORD's discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. The writer of Hebrews later picks up exactly these words to comfort weary believers.

Here is the point. If you only read the promises, you might conclude that the life of wisdom is one long upward line. Barns full, health restored, favor everywhere. But the same chapter admits that the LORD rebukes. Discipline is part of the deal. And it is not a sign that the promises failed. It is a sign of being a son.

The word delights is the one to hold onto. Human discipline is often driven by irritation. A tired parent snaps. A frustrated manager makes an example of someone. God's discipline is driven by delight, by a settled pleasure in the person he is correcting and a determination to see them whole.

Perhaps this summer has included some correction. A plan that fell through. A habit exposed. A relationship where you were shown to be in the wrong. Proverbs 3 invites you to read those things not as evidence of God's absence but as evidence of his attention. He is not finished with you, and he is not annoyed with you. He delights in you, and so he will not leave you as you are.

Trust him with all your heart, the chapter says. That includes trusting him with the parts of your life he is currently reshaping.
