Sit Still Until You Know

Ruth 3 is the tense chapter. Naomi has a plan, and it is a risky one. Ruth washes, dresses, goes down to the threshing floor at night, waits until Boaz has eaten and lain down, and then uncovers his feet and lies there. When he wakes, startled, she asks him to spread his garment over her because he is a kinsman-redeemer. It is a proposal, framed in the language of the law and of his own earlier prayer. Boaz responds with honour. But there is a complication. There is a nearer relative who has the first right to redeem. Boaz will settle it in the morning.

Ruth returns to Naomi before dawn with six measures of barley and the whole story. And Naomi, who set the plan in motion, now gives the opposite instruction. Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. The man will not rest until the matter is settled today.

Notice the sequence. There was a moment for bold action, and Ruth took it. Now there is a moment for stillness, and she must take that too. Both are faith. Both are obedience. The wisdom is in knowing which moment you are in.

Many of us are better at one than the other. Some are quick to act and find waiting unbearable, filling the silence with more plans and more effort long after the matter has passed out of our hands. Others are comfortable waiting and call it patience when it is really fear of stepping onto the threshing floor at all. Ruth models both, and she models them in the right order.

Naomi's reason for waiting is the important part. Ruth can sit still because Boaz will not. The matter is in the hands of someone faithful, and he is already moving. That is the ground of Christian rest. We do not wait because nothing is happening. We wait because someone more capable than us has taken up our cause and will not rest until it is done. The redeemer is at the gate. You can sit down.
