Mercies for the Morning You Did Not Choose
When the day begins before you feel ready for it, there is a grace that has already arrived ahead of you.
Some mornings begin on time. Others begin because they must. You open your eyes to a list that did not shrink overnight, to a worry you had hoped to leave in yesterday. The light comes whether you are ready or not.
The book of Lamentations was written by people who knew mornings like that. It is a slow book, made of grief. In the middle of it, almost without warning, a single sentence turns toward hope: "Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
Notice what it does not say. It does not say the trouble has ended. It does not say the writer feels strong. It says only that mercy is renewed each day, the way bread is given each day, enough for the day in front of you. Not stockpiled. Not deserved. New.
This is why tiredness is not a disqualification. The God described here does not wait for us to recover before drawing near. Jesus made the invitation plain: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
So begin where you are. Pray the short prayer, the one you can manage. Do the next small, honest thing. The mercy you need for this hour has already come to meet you. Tomorrow’s has not arrived yet, and it does not need to. It will be there, new, when the morning is.
