Hometown Unbelief and Two-by-Two

Mark puts two scenes side by side, and the order is the point. First, Jesus goes home. He teaches in the synagogue in Nazareth, and the people are astonished, but their astonishment curdles. They know his mother. They know his brothers by name. He is the carpenter. Who does he think he is? Mark says they took offense at him, and then says something startling: he could not do any miracles there except lay hands on a few sick people. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Then, immediately, he sends the Twelve out two by two. He gives them authority over unclean spirits, and he gives them almost nothing else. A staff. Sandals. No bread, no bag, no money, no second shirt. If a town will not receive you, he says, shake the dust off your feet and move on.

The one idea here is that rejection did not shrink the mission; it multiplied it. Jesus was refused by the people who knew him best, and his answer was to send twelve more voices out into twelve more places. The lack of faith in Nazareth was real and it limited what happened there, but it did not limit what happened next.

There is a lesson in the packing list as well. The disciples were sent light on purpose. They would depend on the hospitality of strangers and on the authority Jesus gave, not on their own supplies. It is the opposite of how most of us prepare for anything. We want the plan, the backup, the reserve. Jesus wanted them to learn early that the work would be done by his authority and God's provision, and that a full bag would only get in the way.

The turn toward life is twofold. If you have been refused by the people closest to you when you tried to speak about Jesus, you are in the Lord's own company, and the refusal is not the end of the story. And if you are waiting to serve until you feel adequately equipped, look at what the Twelve carried. It was not much. They came back with reports of demons cast out and sick people healed. The lightness was part of the method.
